Cosmetic oil is an oily product intended for the care of the face, body, and hair. It is obtained by cold pressing of plant materials (fruits, seeds, and kernels) and high-quality filtration without exposure to high temperatures. Such actions contribute to the preservation of all the beneficial properties inherent in the plants from which it is prepared, and also increases their shelf life.
Cosmetic oils do not contain an aqueous phase, due to which the product turns into an emulsion or cream.
Often, edible oil is confused with cosmetics, although there are differences in them. Cosmetic oil, usually only used for cosmetic purposes, is produced with the Virgin label. This means its products from raw materials using cold pressing and the absence of impurities in it. Typically, this oil is used only externally. But edible oil is added to dishes.
It is worth noting that some cosmetic oils, such as olive or flaxseed oils, are also added to dishes. But cosmetic camphor oil can only be used externally.
There are 3 types of oils:
- vegetable and mineral;
- partially synthesized and natural;
- enriched with ethers or other components.
Each cosmetic oil is unique in its chemical composition and effects on the body. Oils accelerate cell metabolism, activate the processes of collagen and fibrinogen synthesis, moisturize the skin, and normalize the activity of the sebaceous glands.
Learning to Use Cosmetic Oils
In natural cosmetics, a large place is given to natural vegetable oils. On their basis, oil serums are made – mixtures of various vegetable oils, essential oils, and plant extracts to nourish the skin. With the help of oils, you can carry out a ritual of cleansing, make-up removal, massage. They have an amazing effect on the skin, making it instantly velvety and supple. They also protect against oxidative stress, help in the fight against aging, and restore the disturbed lipid barrier of the skin. However, oils are highly concentrated and highly active skincare products and you need to know how to use them.
Many myths soar around oils, and many begin to get lost in the flow of information. I have been working with oils for fourteen years, and during this time I have developed rules for using oils for skincare that will help you get the most out of them and not harm them.

Rules of Using Oils for Skincare:
1. Use oils on well-cleansed skin.
2. Before applying the oil, moisturize the skin well with toner, hydrolat (flower water), water-based gel.
3. Apply 2-4 drops of oil all over your face, it is important not to overdo it.
4. If you are afraid of comedones (blackheads), be sure to remove the remaining oil 15 minutes after application with a tonic or hydrolat.
5. Apply facial oils for no longer than 1 month, then, in most cases, it is worth taking a break.
6. For young skin, you can use facial oils less often, 2 times a week.
7. Apply face oils 4-6 hours before bed, do not go to bed with oil on your face.
8. Monitor your skin’s reaction to the oil. If the skin does not absorb the oil, or the skin is itchy and uncomfortable, stop using or replace the oil with something else.
9. Oils are suitable for any type and condition of the skin, it is important to understand which oil is right for you and how often it should be used.
10. For dry and mature skin, oils can be used as an active serum before applying the cream.
The most active oils to slow down the aging process are rosehip, carrot and black currant seed oils, hemp, and pomegranate oils.
