Today I’ll tell you how to style naturally curly hair and some practical tips about styling curly hair. Also, I will tell you why your hair curls, how to care for it. Curls are not a sentence only for hair. For most of my life, I hated my curly hair. Short haircuts, styling, or coloring – you could forget about everything. Any manipulations with a recalcitrant mane inevitably led to a “dandelion.”
In elementary school, a bad haircut made me look like a light version of Sideshow Bob from The Simpsons. Then she ruined her hair with highlights, and they just fluffed like a cloud over her head. In an attempt to hide this horror, I braided them in pigtails and went to bed so that the next day I could walk with some semblance of normal hair.
I have tried everything that exists for styling curly hair: mousses, gels, foams, varnishes. But it made my scanty (after braids) strands wooden; they looked like homemade dreadlocks. The most anticipated event was a trip to the hairdresser, where after a haircut, my hair was straightened with an iron. Mom allowed me to do this once every couple of months.
I was already resigned that it will always be so. But one day, a diffuser appeared in my life, such as a nozzle for a hairdryer. I didn’t know what to do with that at all. For the sake of the experiment, I dried my wet hair, dividing it into small strands. So I found out that, it turns out, I have curly hair and not just a fluffy mane. Seriously. After the diffuser, they looked pretty standard.
The diffuser is a round spiked nozzle for hair styling. When you put your hair in it, a jet of air blows around the strands from all sides and quickly creates volume. And personally, for me, the thickness of the “thorns” depends on how much the hair will curl. Thick ones will make a light wave, and narrow and often spaced ones – smaller curls.
On straight hair, the diffuser works differently: it simply adds light volume at the roots.
When I realized that all was not lost, I began to take more interest in the care and styling of curly hair. It turned out that 65% of people in the world have their hair curled to one degree or another.

What Makes Hair Curly?
The hair follicles are to be blamed for curly hair. Their shape (which was inherited from your parents) affects the appearance of the hair. When all the strands are symmetrical, the hair is straight. If they are tilted and not parallel to each other, the hair begins to frizz in length.
The follicle is also responsible for the difference in curls: flatter and oval – small curls, round – the hair will be almost straight.
Types of Curly Hair
Hair is divided into four types and three types of curl shape (how much it curls) – A, B, and C. To determine your type, wash your hair and let your hair dry naturally.
2A: The first type only applies to straight hair – curls – from the 2nd to the 4th type. For example, 2A is a light wave and has thin hair. They are straightforward to straighten or lay. They usually curl from the middle, so the main problem is the lack of volume at the roots. I have this type of hair. After washing, they hold volume and curl for a while, but on the second day, they almost straighten.
2B is an S-Shaped Curl: The hairstyle looks fluffy and voluminous. This type can be disciplined with oils. Apply them both before and after shampooing. “But if the hair is thin and the scalp is oily, the oils will glue the hair into one oily rag. In this case, sea salt products are more suitable. They will create a wave and add volume to fine hair”.
2C is almost full-fledged curls: They are drier, so all care products should be moisturizing and sulfate-free. The plus is that this type of hair holds the curl best after any styling.
3C – The third type is curly hair: And if 3A is relatively small curls right from the roots, like Zendaya’s curly hair, then 3B and 3C are already more like an afro. 3B, for example, at Halle Berry. And 3C – at Yara Shahidi. If you have this hair type and your hair is very dry, it’s best to skip the shampoo step altogether and use a cleansing conditioner.
It’s a common misconception that type 3C hair is very porous. This is not the case. They require a unique approach, like any curly hair.
The fourth type is African curls. In our geographic zone, such curls are rare, and it isn’t easy to find care products for them.
4C curls are very strong and form an almost immobile cap on the head. This is the type of hair that actress Lupita Nyong’o has. But her stylist François assures that this is just a unique texture, and with it, you can come up with many styling options.
Curly Girl Method
Author of the book “Curly Hair. A hairstyle, haircut, care “Lorraine Messi compiled the most understandable and detailed instructions (called Curly Girl Method) for curly and curly hair care. The bottom line is to eliminate sulfate agents as they dry out. It is also advisable to get rid of oils and silicones as they inhibit hydration.
Hair should be blotted exclusively with a microfiber towel and wrapped for a while in a turban. There should not be any “rubbing” movements – the curls are effortless to damage. Always apply an indelible gel to wet hair, and dry it only with a diffuser or naturally.
It’s important to remember that most curly hair is porous and dry. So, forget about aggressive thermal styling and styling products (this is also my mistake).
For myself, I worked out such a scheme.
My head with a moisturizing shampoo and conditioner. I use detox shampoo once a week. I gently blot my hair with a towel, tilting my head down.
After ten minutes, I detangle my hair with a damp comb. Tangle Teezer has one. She unravels and does not pull out the hairs (Such a comb must be suitable only for two types of curls, they are easy to untangle).
I apply a care cream that forms a curl. By the way, styling care is a good option for those with curls. In addition to keeping your hair tidy, it is always hydrated.
After 20 minutes, I dry my hair with a diffuser. Once a week, apply nourishing hair oil or a moisturizing mask at night.

How to Cut and Dry Curls?
Any stylist knows that curls (as opposed to straight hair) are best cut dry. Then there will be no surprises: you can immediately see how the curl lays down. And no thinning! So, they will only fluff up more.
Another important point: the long curly hair, the straighter it is (from its weight); the shorter, the more curly. So, I discovered short haircuts, although I could not even think about them before. The main thing is to find the right stylist who knows how to shape the hair so that it looks good.
Always choose a wide-toothed comb. The massage brushes will confuse, tear and injure. If you have type 3 or 4 curls, you should generally stay away from the comb – you will only tangle and fluff your hair more.
Start combing from the ends, gradually working upward. It reduces the risk of hair breaking or tangling up the comb.
Comb through wet hair. When combing dry, they will only frizz more.
Mixing in a little detangling gel with leave-in care makes a good curl shaper. Apply it after washing, and do not rinse. Hair can be allowed to dry naturally.
If you have long hair 2C or any type 3, you can tie it in a high, relaxed bun at night. So, they will not get confused and will better keep their shape the next day.
If your hair is fluffy or straightened by the morning, you can mix some warm water with a leave-in conditioner and apply it to your hair. And then lay with a diffuser nozzle.
Sleep on a silk pillow. It will keep your hair tangle-free and stay smooth by morning.
Sea salt products work well when applied to damp hair: they make a “beach” styling as if you just came out of the sea. But it is better not to abuse them and use them no more than once a week not to dry out the curls.
If you have curly but oily and non-porous hair, it does not need to be constantly moisturized with masks and oils – it will become heavy and will not keep its shape.
